US baseball news.
Josh Harrison chosen to represent Pirates at All-Star Game.
Joshua Isaiah "Josh" Harrison was born July 8,
1987. He is an American professional baseball second baseman with the
Pittsburgh Pirates of Major League Baseball (MLB). Harrison has also played
third base and outfield for the Pirates.
Josh Harrison participated in his second All Star game
yesterday. His first came back in 2014, when he broke out in a major way. Josh
Harrison said he will bring his usual assortment of gloves to the All-Star
Game.
Jung Ho Kang's visa problems and Starling Marte's suspension
forced Harrison back into a multi-position role.
After signing a four-year contract of $ 27.5 million with
two options of the team, after five years of work, Josh Harrison struggled
through the two intervening seasons, never quite putting together a season
approaching his 2014 highs.
In 2015 and 2016, Harrison put up a combined 2.8 fWAR.
Harrison seemed to have carved out a profile for himself that represented the
type of player many clubs would love to have it.
Harrison said with a grin that I will take what I normally
take: an infield, an outfield. Harrison will be the lone Pirate in the game.
Harrison tops the majors with 18 hit by pitches, a skill he doens't have to
display in Miami.
He is a 2017 NL All Star, and he does deserve that
recognition, however underwhelming it might seem. During his 2014-2015
downturn, with just a 3.9 percent walk rate for his career, Harrison loves to
put the ball in play. It ended up serving as his undoing.
More info about Josh Harrison:
On July 6, 2014, Harrison was selected to his first career
All-Star Game, along with teammates Andrew McCutchen and Tony Watson. At the
time of his selection, Harrison was hitting .298 through 72 games. Harrison
also had played 5 different positions throughout the season, and was listed as
a utility player for the All-Star Game.
Since then, Harrison has played multiple positions for the
Pirates. He spends most of his time at third base following Pedro Álverez's
move to 1st Base. Harrison finished 2014 with the best statistics of his career
with a .315 batting average, 13 home runs, 52 runs batted in, and finished ninth
in voting for NL MVP.
Harrison began the 2015 season as the starting third baseman
for the Pirates, agreeing to a four-year contract extension through 2018, with
club options for 2019 and 2020, shortly after the season's start.
Following the 2015 season, the Pirates' regular starting
Second baseman, Neil Walker, was traded to the New York Mets. Josh Harrison is
slated to begin the 2016 season starting at second base.
