Wimbledon News.
Spanish professional tennis Rafael Nadal falls in fifth set
at Wimbledon.
Fifth-seeded Nadal fell behind two sets to none, with his
loss in the first set snapping a streak of 28 straight completed sets won in
Grand Slams. He erased a two-set deficit. Then, he erased four match points.
Nadal could not, however, erase the fifth.
Rafael Nadal admitted 34 games. He only lost 35 in the
entire French Open in 2017. Nadal lost despite defeating Muller, 198-191.
Muller managed to pull this one out, unfazed but allowing
opportunities to pass him by. No. 16 seed Gilles Muller got him in a four-hour,
47-minute, five-set marathon to post the upset and advance to his second career
quarterfinals.
Although good playing as in the opening game, Nadal could
not handle Muller's attack and hit the attacking net. Muller's powerful
attacks, Nadal failed to win.
Many people find the surprising failure has prolonged
Nadal's drought. He has won two of his 15 Grand Slam championships at
Wimbledon, and played in the final three other times, most recently in 2011,
but since then, Nadal’s exits at the All England Club.
Nadal has won 15 Grand Slam singles titles, the 2008 Olympic
gold medal in singles, an all-time record of 30 ATP World Tour Masters 1000
titles, tied with Novak Djokovic, and 18 ATP World Tour 500 tournaments.
He was also a member of the winning Spain Davis Cup team in
2004, 2008, 2009, and 2011. In 2010, he became the seventh male player in
history and youngest of five in the Open Era to achieve the Career Grand Slam
at age 24.
He is the second male player, after Andre Agassi, to
complete the singles Career Golden Slam. In 2011, Nadal was named the Laureus
World Sportsman of the Year. The left-hander is the sixth player in the Open Era
to reach more than 100 finals on the ATP World Tour.
Nadal is the only male player in tennis history to win one
Grand Slam and at least one Masters 1000 title for ten consecutive years from
2005–2014. He beat Guillermo Vilas's Open Era record of 49 clay-court titles by
winning the Monte-Carlo Masters in 2017.
Nadal became the first man to win the same tournament 10
times by winning the Monte-Carlo Masters in 2017. By winning the 2017 French
Open, Nadal became the first male and second overall to win a single Grand Slam
tournament 10 times.
But clearly at Wimbledon 2017, Rafael Nadal simply got
outlasted. The fifth set alone lasted 2 hours, 15 minutes, and Nadal could not
manage to complete what would have been his fourth career comeback from two
sets down. Therefore, Muller who was able to enjoy a win that seemed to be
slipping away.
It is regrettable for Rafael Nadal's great efforts.
